And I've had trouble with being able to get myself to do a lot of the things in the book. This book brings me hope and helps me.

You become a master at separating your professional and personal life. At work, you put on your mask and somehow find the strength to do your job, only to go home and fight through wave after wave of panic. The silence is deafening, the alcohol accessible, and you find yourself sitting in the corner of your room staring at the door wondering if you are secure in your own home.
I know what it's like to go through hell and to have the "experts" telling you that you just need to "go for 20 minute brisk walk" or "get out and socialize more" as if you have the mental capacity and physical stamina to do anything more than the critical minimum. I know what it's like to feel like you're constantly failing because you're not achieving standards set by someone else who is giving you thriving strategies when you need crisis survival techniques.
As I fought for survival for myself and for those I support and held on to the hope that the light at the end of the tunnel wasn't just another train, I began looking for ways to use the tidbits I have learned along the way to support other people who are going through similar situations.
And That's When It Hit Me...
The bar for self-care while in crisis is too high. The current requirements of the self-care wheel are not designed for someone who can barely find the courage to open their eyes or get out of bed to use the washroom. They are a standard for someone who is thriving and the gap between thriving and crisis is too wide to successfully leap.
I began to shift the way I viewed self-care and made it attainable for me and for my family. And I began to celebrate every microscopic victory. Made an attempt to make the bed? Victory. Brushed my teeth? Victory. Ate one bite of food? Victory. Pulled a weed from my garden? Victory. Unnoticeablely, shifts began to occur. At some point, bedmaking became the way I start my day. Teeth get brushed regularly. I can eat full meals and snacks with minimal effort most of the time. I became able to stack my garden weeding with taking the dog for a pee.
The Adaptable Warrior is written to provide a crisis functional support so you too can find and celebrate those moments of attainable victories as you stabilize, heal, recover, and shift into the post trauma version of yourself.

Cher Tanner
Cher wanted to be an RN ever since she was a little girl. After high school, she relentlessly pursued her dream and finished her degree in 4 short years.
She worked in community nursing for 3 years before moving on to be an O.R. (Operating Room) nurse at the Victoria Hospital in London, ON. After recovering from an unforeseen setback, she transitioned to start her own practice as an RN, Psychotherapist.
During her training, she realized that the "self-care" industry set the bar too high for people who were experiencing severe PTSD and trauma, and "The Adaptable Warrior" book was born.
